The Mountain

Originally Aired: March 16, 1953

Suspense #504, "The Mountain," presents a harrowing tale of ambition and survival at 22,000 feet. Six men remain at the fourth camp of an unconquered peak, determined to be the first to reach its summit. The team must split into two groups of three, and expedition leader Bob makes the difficult choice to take Perucci and the volatile John Eldridge on the first attempt, leaving Thomas, Feldman, and the injured Harry Gaines behind. Despite concerns about Eldridge's temperament and nerves, the climb begins at daybreak.

As the trio ascends the treacherous northwest ridge toward the 26,000-foot summit, disaster strikes when Perucci falls into a crevasse. With soft snow giving way beneath him and the terrible weight of the dangling climber pulling on the rope, Eldridge finds himself sliding helplessly toward the edge. Bob must make a desperate decision while both men hang in the balance, and in the chaos that follows, the expedition suffers a devastating loss that will haunt the survivors as they face the mountain's remaining challenges.
